"Mountain Voices: Engaging Communities in the Preservation of Mountain Heritage"
Tool/methodology name:
eARTh Project Overview:
The eARTh project, a Creative Europe initiative, was conceived to explore the deep connections between art and the environment. Operating under the belief that "the Earth without art is just eh," the project brought together participants from Greece, Italy, and Hungary to engage in a dynamic exploration of how artistic expression can foster environmental consciousness. Through a series of transdisciplinary workshops, participants delved into creative writing, music, performance, and visual arts, all while reflecting on the pressing issue of climate change. The project aimed to use art as a medium to evoke empathy, inspire action, and bridge cultural differences, ultimately contributing to the preservation and appreciation of our shared natural heritage. The result was a vibrant tapestry of collaborative works that celebrated both the diversity of European cultures and the shared responsibility of environmental stewardship.
Adapted Workshop for PEAKED Project:
The "Mountain Voices: Community Engagement in Mountain Heritage Preservation" workshop is an adaptation of the eARTh project, specifically tailored to the goals of the PEAKED project. Focused on residents and youth in mountain regions, this workshop shifts the emphasis from professional artistic expression to community-based activities that are accessible to all. Participants are invited to explore and document the cultural and environmental heritage of their mountain communities through simple, creative exercises. These activities include mapping local heritage sites, sharing oral histories and legends, and recording the natural soundscapes that characterize their environment. The workshop aims to deepen participants' connection to their surroundings, fostering a sense of pride and responsibility toward preserving their unique mountain heritage. By aligning with the PEAKED project's objectives, the workshop promotes sustainability, resilience, and cultural awareness in mountain areas.
Tools and Resources:
The tools and resources used in the workshop are simple and readily accessible, ensuring that all participants can easily engage in the activities. Key tools include smartphones or basic recording devices for capturing soundscapes, large maps for community mapping exercises, and basic art supplies for illustrating stories or creating visual representations of cultural heritage sites. Additionally, the workshop encourages the use of digital platforms for sharing and archiving the collected data, such as community websites or social media groups. These tools are selected to be user-friendly and non-intimidating, allowing participants to focus on the content of their contributions rather than the technology itself. By leveraging these accessible tools, the workshop fosters an inclusive environment where everyone can contribute to the preservation and celebration of mountain heritage.

Description
Methodology: The "Mountain Voices: Community Engagement in Mountain Heritage Preservation" workshop is designed around participatory learning and community engagement principles. It provides a platform for residents and youth in mountain regions to actively contribute to the preservation and understanding of their cultural and environmental heritage. The methodology is centered on accessible, hands-on activities that do not require prior artistic experience, making it inclusive for all participants. By focusing on creative exercises that involve storytelling, collaborative art projects, and critical thinking, the workshop fosters a deep connection between participants and their mountain environments.
Theoretical Background: This workshop is grounded in the principles of community-based environmental education and experiential learning. Community-based environmental education stresses the importance of involving local communities in the preservation of their unique natural and cultural environments, particularly in areas like mountain regions where the two are deeply intertwined. Experiential learning theory underpins the workshop's approach, which emphasizes learning through direct experience and reflection. Participants engage in activities that connect them with their cultural heritage and environment, facilitating a personal and collective understanding of their mountain regions' significance.
Activities:
Imaginary Ecosystem Journey: Participants embark on an imaginative journey inspired by the local mountain environment. One group starts by creating a narrative about this ecosystem, another group illustrates scenes from the story, and musicians or participants with creative interests collaborate to compose a fitting soundtrack. Performers, or other participants, act out the journey, guided by the narrative and soundtrack. This activity emphasizes the interconnectedness of art, culture, and nature in mountain regions.
Environmental Artistic Dialogue: The exercise begins with a participant (or a writer) composing a short text about an environmental challenge or cultural aspect of the mountain area. The next participant (or illustrator) creates a visual representation of the text. Musicians or other creative participants then compose a piece inspired by the visual art. Finally, performers or additional participants use this music as a backdrop for an improvised performance. This activity highlights the diverse ways in which cultural and environmental narratives can be expressed and preserved.
Future News Headlines - Mountain Focus: Participants create headlines for news articles from three different future scenarios: a dystopian present, a utopian future, and a realistic near future. These headlines should reflect the potential impact of climate change and other environmental pressures on mountain communities. The exercise promotes critical thinking and awareness of the need for proactive environmental and cultural preservation efforts.
Kinesthetic Climate Art - Mountain Edition: Participants engage in a group art project that focuses on climate change and its impact on mountain regions. Using art supplies like paint and canvas, participants use their bodies to create large-scale climate-themed art. For example, they might use handprints to depict the effects of melting glaciers or deforestation. This activity combines physical movement with creative expression, helping participants connect with the environmental realities of their region.
Results
