Intelligent Water Consumption System (IWCS)
Tool/methodology name:
Intelligent Water Consumption System (IWCS) climate change adaptation tool in the agriculture/water is a system that relies on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to manage and optimize irrigation processes in an efficient and sustainable manner.Â
Location:
Jordan
Type of initiative:
Climate Change: Water Conservation, Irrigation Efficiency, and Climate Change Adaptation
Target groups
- Farmers
- Sustainable Agriculture Practitioners
- Teachers, Trainers, and Educators
- Youth Workers
- Youth
- Students and Trainees
- Decision-makers in Water Conservation, Irrigation Efficiency, and Climate Change Adaptation
- Stakeholders on Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change Adaptation resilience strategies.
Objectives
The goal of this system is to monitor, control the quality and quantity, and analyze water usage in irrigation precisely, to identify irrigation patterns, and to provide recommendations to farmers to reduce waste and ensure the optimal use of water resources in agriculture.
Description
Methodology:
The tool could be operated by inviting students and young people to experience installing sensors on selected irrigation systems or in the soil, to show them how to collect data related to moisture, temperature, and water levels, and then transmit this data to an analytical platform. The platform processes this data using AI techniques to determine the optimal amount of water needed for each crop based on weather conditions, soil type, and the growth stage of the plant. Students can suggest and test different crop patterns and irrigation scenarios based on climate change impact in the targeted area.
Results
Advantages of the Smart Irrigation System include:
- Reducing water waste: By closely monitoring water usage in irrigation, any leaks or over-irrigation of crops can be detected and quickly addressed.
- Improving irrigation efficiency: Providing accurate recommendations to farmers based on continuous data, ensuring the right amount of water is used at the right time.
- Supporting environmental sustainability: Contributing to the conservation of water resources and reducing the negative environmental impact caused by inefficient irrigation.
- Increasing agricultural productivity: By providing plants with the optimal amount of water, crop quality can be improved, and productivity can be increased.
- Reducing operational costs: By reducing water and energy consumption used in irrigation, operational costs for farmers can be lowered.
Innovative elements
- The Smart Irrigation System is part of advanced solutions to address challenges related to water resource management in agriculture and serves as a living example of how technology can be used to enhance sustainability and achieve greater efficiency in the use of natural resources.
- The innovative element is enabling the students to see the applications of AI and Internet of Things in climate change adaptation measures in the agriculture sector.
Additional information
IWCS is incubated by the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) in Jordan. The business incubators are participatory programs designed to help new entrepreneurial projects succeed. It helps the entrepreneurs provide training, guidance, and solve problems related to their emerging project, and also provide them with access to financing by connecting them with investors. Incubators also provide shared work spaces that facilitate the entrepreneur’s work and enable them to interact with other entrepreneurs by creating a small entrepreneurial environment for exchanging experiences. Thus, the first goal of incubators is to make the emerging project successful and develop.
NARC launched the Agricultural Innovation & Entrepreneurship Incubator Initiative on 26/02/2019, which is the result of the NARC main role in the spread of agricultural science and knowledge, which aims at transforming entrepreneurial ideas into real projects that promote the national economy and contribute to sustainable development and create job opportunities and outstanding success stories.
